People

It's a family affair - the Fields team is ever changing. The main driving force is Emily, this is her dream. Constant team players are Emily's mum and dad, sister, partner and nieces. Each have various roles in the restoring and making process.

Emily Field - founder Field. Emily finds things, puts them together, makes and restores them. Coming from fashion with a design, production and manufacturing background, Emily is hands on in every aspect of The Fields.

Mum Field - the dyer. Mum hand-dyes all the colours of the rainbow, plus the extra special indigo. We are lucky enough to have her exceptional skills and experience as a textile artist.

Dad Field - the wood man. Dangerous Dad repairing, shaping, steaming, glueing, clamping. Dad loves applying a the Danish oil, but the buffing is a bore.

Sister Field - the cutter, expertly cutting each chair and cushion cover by hand. Plus every decoration.

Young Niece Field - the secretary. Emailing customers, felting Woolly Holly berries, sanding chairs, printing swing tickets, selling at the festivals.

Everyone else - finding, driving, collecting, delivering, packing, stacking, carrying, cleaning, painting, oiling, waxing, photographing writing, editing, selling etc etc.

Around the busy periods other family members chip in to help!

Family really is the heart of The Fields.

Our Brand

The Fields is a family run small business who operate from both London and Cornwall. We make, restore and sell Mid Century Modern furniture, hand-dyed bright colour cushions, vintage indigo blankets, funky deckchairs, lighting and decorations.

Vintage Made Modern - we pride ourselves in restoring vintage items to their best possible potential. We don't just restore furniture, we take things that would otherwise be scrapped/binned/sent to landfill, and we transform them. The idea being, each piece will be as good its original state with a high quality finish.

Design-led - we source and restore with design in mind and choose carefully. This is reflected in our appreciation and use of Ercol furniture, its classic designs, expert manufacture and the ethos of the company.

Planet Friendly - reusing and restoring is recycling. We do our best to use the most planet friendly procedures and products.

Wood - we strip our furniture of old finishes by blasting it, no chemicals or water is used, just power and sand.

Finishes - we finish the wood with oil or wax. Our Danish oil (made in the next village to us in Cornwall) is natural, food safe and without any nasty VOC's. We also use Parr's organic beeswax oil and Osmo hard wax oil, to give a choice of finish.

Wool - the decision to use vintage wool blankets as fabric, was an environmental decision. Natural fabric's are biodegradable and are much more hypoallergenic than synthetic's. Wool is naturally fire proof, this means it does not need to be treated with chemicals. We do use new wool for our cushion fillings, the wool is from British sheep and is processed in the U.K. Helping to support struggling sheep farmers.

Foam - we try to use existing foam where possible as foam is made from oil. However, this is not always possible because the original foam may have been made before the 1988 regulations or have perished. We are working on sourcing a rubber based alternative.

Webbing - we use a 'dead stock' stretch woven webbing, from the 1970's, made with hessian. The webbing is fixed with the loop and peg method, no staples. This is the traditional Ercol method, developed so it can be easily replaced.

Deckchairs - we buy and restore ex hire deckchairs, that are made in the U.K. using sustainable hardwood. The frames are well made and strong. All slings are triple layered, that can be removed and washed. Where possible we reuse the original canvas as the inner, for the outside we use vintage fabric's (often curtains).

Plant Based - it's a joke! I see this on so many brands I like that I wanted to include it.

Hub of Colour - we love strong, deep colours, clashing colours and mismatch. It's all about the colour.

We are still writing this section. If you have any questions please do get in touch.
